PROGRAMME NOTE
The idea for Bells & Echoes begun when I was studying the Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s watercolour and pencil drawing Hävitys. This sombre work shows a large church bell destroyed and partially buried in ash, with a dark apocalyptic background. Gallen-Kallela is thought to have been inspired by a similar drawing in astronomer Camille Flammarion’s book Les éruptions volcaniques et les tremblements de terre. The idea of the haunting echoes of destroyed bells, evoked by Gallen-Kallela’s and Flammario’s works, inspired the sound world of my composition, and can most clearly be heard in the bell-like musical motifs. The theme is also reflected in the structure: the work is divided into three pairs of ‘bells and echoes’.
